1. Sub-Duct Nuclear energy can't become viable or profitable until the "dangerous radioactive waste" problem is solved. The most practical and permanent solution is to plant it deep in the moving ocean tectonic plates that are sliding under the continental tectonic plates. Called subduction, this slow geological process will carry the hot waste as much as 40 miles down, and possibly down further, maybe into Earth's molten magma layer, if it is first properly buried under the 5- to 7-mile deep ocean trenches. 2. Smoker Form Adults who demand the right to smoke must sign this form, taking full responsibility for their future lung diseases and other problems, so they will not be a burden on society. There is no reason that the public should pay for the illness and other results of any smoker, so this form must be signed by every smoker when he purchases every pack of cigarettes, and these thousands of copies kept on file until needed. It simply says he recognizes and will personally accept ALL of the responsibility (and costs) of his smoking, thus saving government, public, HMOs and insurance companies ALL the costs of his coming illness, pain, suffering, and slow suicidal death. This will allow the smoker to keep smoking AND the government to still collect all of the cigarette taxes, absolved of complicity and obligation. (However, I have no solution yet for all the tax money lost by smokers scared into actually quitting by this gory description of their suffering.) 4. Bloomberg1 A practical solution to the Traffic problem that is NYC's worst nightmare. With NYC's streets so badly clogged with traffic, there is only one way to go, a new narrow design 2-person Citi-Car, maybe only 30" wide, making more but narrower lanes possible, plus total off-street parking, to free all possible lanes for traffic flow. This will be good for the garage business, give Detroit a lot of new business building millions of new Citi-Cars for all US cities that follow suit, and creating or keeping many thousands of jobs. 5. Bloomberg2 Already the Capital of the world in business, financial, and other fields, New York City also had 29.5 million visitors, who spent $8.8 billion, in 2001. (Both numbers could have been about 10% larger.) NYC should secede from NY's unimaginative up-state hicks and become in fact the World Capital District (like Wash, DC) and go for the gold. Think of how much more travel, tourist, and other business that would bring in, taxes generated, how many more jobs created, as well as the prestige and all the other benefits. 13. Medically Induced Coma Practical deterrent for serious crime, yet appeasing those against capital punishment. Our present penal system neither corrects nor truly prevents most crime. But what if the criminal-to-be knew he will be unable to enjoy tv, music, good prison food, exercise, and the company of other inmates, because for the remainder of his natural life he will be sound asleep, in a Medically Induced Coma, in a very quiet very sanitary facility, stored like cold dead meat, deep underground, in other nations that need the income, like Russia, Argentina, etc. Huge financial and social savings, a quarter to a third our costs here. No need to spend three people's wages for each inmate, no more prison riots, learning better crime from other inmates, male rape, recidivism, and other 'correction' problems. Too bad we can't send some of their lawyers with them. But this still leaves three problems: [1] those who will commit crimes anyway, who believe they will not get caught, or not this time; [2] that somehow they will beat the rap if they are caught, and that what they are about to do is not really wrong, but a special case, and themselves and their needs and desires make it okay, and [3] that life in prison is better than on the street. We must somehow teach every criminal four things: [a] that they will get caught, without exception; [b] that they will go to prison, or a coma facility; [c] that they are not special and exempt from the law; and [d] that doing certain things are crimes and are punishable no matter who does them or why. In fact, many criminals do not see it as wrong and punishable to walk into another person's house to take something, and not a real reason for the owner to get the law on them, or shoot them. Before all else, fighting crime is a matter of education, starting at the earliest possible age, long before the child can begin to grow the wrong way. Dear Representative An open letter to write to your Congress people: they are elected (and thus hired) by the public, to represent the public, not support big business; not take 'donations' and be run by PACs to implement laws not to the benefit of the public. 18. STEM For the scientifically adept; some detailed predictions on discoveries soon to be made in Space, Time, Energy, and Matter (STEM) matters. Physicists are approaching Einstein's understanding that space and time are the same, simply two parts of the same cycle that also includes energy and matter, the fundamental building block of the quark's interior folded string being the STEM unit, which, seen one way is space and seen another is time, and another energy and another matter, all totally interchangeable. 19. BigScope NASA's Space program will soon include a whole array of independent Hubble-sized telescopes and astronomy study units, placed to sit still in space, all along the earth's orbit around the sun, thus creating a virtual radio telescope 184 million miles in diameter, and enabling us to see all the way to the edges of the universe, where space turns to time. 20. Origin of the Bible. Poor Lancelot Andrewes' problems in compiling the King James Version from all the previous bibles and other holy documents, in so many other languages, with a very frightened King James, desperate to go to heaven, but only the right heaven, breathing on his neck. 21. FutureBiz There is no doubt that the international marketplace is the goal for the near and deep future, and thus the multinational Corporation field of play. Any company that does not find or develop the smartest staff brains and make the right decisions and alliances will be left behind. 25. TerrThreat Whether by dictatorial religious fundamentalist groups or individuals, this is the third most dangerous thing we face, after Islam and liberalism. Not the home-brewed bugs and chemicals and dirty bombs themselves, but the fear of them, will force us to abort liberty in seeking safety, the sure for the chimera, and sadly end free democracy, the greatest social experiment in human history. There is no such thing as security. Never was. Never will be. From any of dozens of causes, you can die or be injured before you can read the next sentence. Ben Franklin said that those who would give up freedom for security deserve neither, but today's America will accept that trade, and it's slavery, for we have lost our national backbone. America has become feminized by liberals and their political correctness; our women, ascendant, must appease and play safe rather than face danger and conquer it, seeing words and appearances as more important than substantive decision and decisive action. 26. Pollution The only cause of pollution is humans, and until people can govern their own number, one way or another, pollution will continue, and escalate along with population. We need to reduce Six Billion to within the Earth's Absorption and Recovery Limit, but what IS that EARL number, and how is it determined, and how can that 'reduction' be done? GlobalWarm The planet can recover from an enormous amount of abuse, but has flipped from green house to ice age, and back, many times in the past, and can be accelerated to these in the future, by the hand of man. DefenseBudget Could be cut in half and savings be refunded or be given to education, by training and arming every adult eligible American citizen (except criminals), which would be true defense, but our leaders must lead, and the only way they can see open is toward global conflict and war and aggression, overt or subvert. 29. Genetics DNA manipulation, cloning, stem cell therapy. The next great new thing, which, like fire and steel, can burn or cut those who use it ignorantly, but must be explored for all the good it can do. When diseased organs can be replaced by stem cell redirection, and teeth be re-generated at 60, and telomeres be added to in old age, we will then need to face the problems caused by more humans, living longer and better. No free lunch there. We will discover that, yes, people can be replaced by machines, clones, androids and other bio-mech-creatures, and other alternatives that don't require sleep, vacations, pay, civil rights, and so on. And will be. You can not yet imagine all of the benefits, and horrors, any more than Einstein, Schrodinger, or Max Planck could imagine what has already come from their contributions. 30. Privacy Is it already gone? All our most private personal information already in databases? To be shared by all, and drooled over and snickered at by every voyeur? Yup. Welcome the New World Order. Secrecy benefits the greedy and ruthless rather than the public, and the wealthy and powerful want to keep it that way, so nobody knows how they got what they have. The public wants it too. So the wealthy will continue to grow richer, the poor and middle class poorer, as all cultures have before us. 31. Foreign Aid An effective stick and carrot mechanism in the past, but this is no longer the past. If the American public ever became aware of some of the deals and agreements our politicians have made, and how painful it will become sitting astride several very sharp dilemma horns, they would lynch our leaders. (And the undercover kickbacks and tradeoffs! This is real grease. The biggest and best crooks always go where the biggest money is. Guess where, these days.) 32. Immigration How else to compensate for the graying of the workforce, but at what costs and dangers? Who should come and who should go? Who is to decide? And how? And why? 34. GovtSals/Payroll The argument 'we need to pay the best salaries to get the best people in government' is disproved every day by the fact that the same big problems persist decade after decade. The American public should demand that ALL government salaries be set at the lowest common denominator, the national mean average, ($9.75/hr?) until they get real results (without further cost), and so that, if the bureaucrats and uncivil civil service want more, they have to let ALL the public earn more, first, to bring up that average. And let all public office holders sit on hard benches or stand all day, and ride the subway like every other citizen, without chauffeured limousines and bodyguards, demonstrating true service of the public status. Oil Dependency Another crime to lay at the government's doorstep, for caving to the oil PAC and not developing alternate energy sources such as wind, water, sun, thermal, etc. Thirty three years since we landed on the moon, and with all that raw material up there, and clear undiluted sunlight for power to manufacture energy cells, nothing has happened yet. Welfare Another problem the government fumbled, first by closing the asylums and tossing the mad onto the street, then by not re-educating them for productive work but shaming them and society in public view, decade after decade. Clearly, if the best (and best paid) government minds and lawmakers and courts and representatives and senators allow such a situation, fine in legal theory and democratic principle, but horrible in real life results, then enough is wrong in the government that maybe this nation needs a real people's government, run by the public, to oversee our present government of the people, by the government, for the government. 37. FirstWeDisarmThePublic The NRA is wrong. Our government loves us, and would never hurt us. That's why it must completely disarm the public, so people can not hurt each other by accident or on purpose, or illegally 'defend' themselves against any imagined danger, but must always wait for and depend upon the police and authorities to defend them, when they have time to come around (well after the need for help has passed, for their own safety). America has been conquered by our own women, forced to be dependent. Privacy is already gone, an archaic idea no longer feasible. Every house now must be searched, every firearm and knife and every other possible weapon must be confiscated, by force if necessary, for the safety of the public. The airline safety rules are the test case which broke the ice and allowed escalation, because the public went along like sheep, without protest. (Search and confiscation is now legal and lawful; see “Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act of 2001", certain anti-terrorism laws, the 2002 Defense Authorization Bill, and Canada's several Human Rights and Anti-Hate laws, which can affect Americans.) Every American must be strip-searched, all body cavities, finger printed, retinal pattern printed, smell printed, DNA registered, and full frontal photographed, for the Federal ID identity data banks. All private and public phones, radios, computers, and other communication devices must be V-chipped and Carnivore-certified, and every room in every house wired for safety monitors, by law. The public must be controlled, no longer allowed to make unauthorized dangerous personal decisions, never allowed to endanger the lives and safety and rights of others. 'Others' includes criminals, because they do not save their wealth but keep it in constant circulation, benefiting the whole public and raising the GNP. That's why all professional criminals will be licensed, have to pay taxes, and if they can not produce a required verified periodic minimum take, will lose their independent agent certification and covert entry tools and concealed weapon carry permits, have to return to re-learn their craft and trade specialization before re - certification. 38. Span-US Clearly, Spanish must soon be declared the official language of the United States, due to the rapidly growing Hispanic population use of it. We will finally return to simple one language status, making this one easy language compulsory for all official records and other documentation, ending our confusing and expensive multi-lingual usage experiment. Those who preferred that complex and constantly changing old American English language did not act in time, and have therefore permanently lost their chance and all rights to speak it except in the privacy (?) of their own homes, with serious fines for public violation of the new "One Language" Laws. The above are only a few of the hundreds of real life topics that your small fast SASS Discipline corporate Study Teams work on, to build and expand their minds, knowledge, experience, imagination, resourcefulness, application abilities, future forecasting, logic, peopling, etc. In using the SASS Discipline toward developing your own future leadership cadre, you will also add real problems that your company has, issues in your industry, and so on. The main principle here is that by doing their own in-depth research and writing out and presenting their problem solutions, the students learn more than they can ever be taught in any traditional program. A second principle is that we make every assignment very hard, to require and inculcate cooperation, and to stretch and strengthen their minds to the maximum, not merely satisfy minimums. There is no lack of social, technical, and other problems for your Study Teams to research and propose solutions for, while learning at least four times faster, deeper, and more than any traditional education system can teach them. In essence, we reverse the 'education' process, requiring the Study Team to do their own research and then teach us about the subject, for which they must learn it very well if they are to be able to answer our questions about it and propose more than unacceptable simplistic replies. To the above list add all the other problems you can think of, and you will begin to understand the power of the SASS Discipline.
